Tasty Tuesday: What’s old is new again at Poppy’s of Christiansburg

The Williams are filling the niche left behind by Christiansburg’s Custard Corner

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. – One New River Valley family banded together to bring back old classics to Christiansburg.

“‘Why don’t you call it Poppy’s?’ And that’s what my son calls his grandfather.”

Brothers, Terry and Jeremy Williams, are leading the charge.

They, along with help from other relatives, have taken a pile of dirt and made a family business in less than a year.

Terry tells us, “This business was started from the ground up. It wasn’t a building sitting here. It was a piece of land about six months ago, and we’re open today.”

Poppy’s of Christiansburg is open for business, and the town is well aware!

“So many people said, ‘you’re going to be busy. You’re going to be busy.’ They were right. That’s for sure!”

This shop is known for its nostalgic ice cream, like the kids’ favorite ‘Superman.’

Its classic red hot dogs (with all the fixins) should not be overlooked.

Jeremy says, “When you sell 1,000 hot dogs in four days. The red hot dogs have been amazing.”

A busy opening week left this dynamic duo feeling, “Appreciatively overwhelmed. It’s been great. We never dreamed of having the crowd size.”

The success continues! Just look at what Poppy’s posted after a busy day Monday!

The Williams are Christiansburg natives, so they remember when Custard Corner drew similar crowds. Now, the family has filled the niche left behind with things like strawberry shortcakes, milkshakes and my favorite - Stormies!

“Our dog was named Stormy. He was a member of our family just like everyone’s family pet. This was kind-of a way for us to remember Stormy.”

The brothers also tell us they’ve ventured into ice cream flights. They’re calling them “Penguins.”

Poppy’s is closed Tuesdays, but opens at 3 p.m. every other day of the week.
