Pittsylvania County crews offering free smoke detector installation
Thanks to a partnership between Pittsylvania County Public Safety, the Fire Marshalโs Office, and the Red Cross, they are offering free installation of smoke detectors in Pittsylvania County residences that do not have one already installed, their website said.

The Roanoke City Council is pushing an incentive forward to increase housing opportunities in the Star City โ City leaders approved a $50,000 grant from the Virginia Housing Development Authority during their session Tuesday.

Blacksburg to address affordable housing shortage with $1 million federal grant
BLACKSBURG, Va. โ Blacksburg remains an in-demand place to live, but finding a home or rental in town has become a challenge due to a limited supply. The town hopes to remedy the situation with its annual round of Housing and Urban Development funding. Assistant to the town manager Matt Hanratty oversees those projects and said the need is crucial for more lower-income and middle-income housing. โWe really need that non-student housing and itโs tougher and tougher to find in Blacksburg, especially with a market that is so tight,โ Hanratty said. โI was seeing students that couldnโt afford housing or got kicked out because they couldnโt pay rent, and not having any options.โ
Roanoke Valley home sales break records in 2020
ROANOKE, Va. โ If youโre looking for a new a home in the Roanoke Valley, youโre far from the only one. The Roanoke Valley Association of Realtors said 2020 was a record-breaking year for realty, and the trends are continuing into 2021. The organization reports 6,398 homes were sold in the Roanoke Valley last year, with an average sale price of $265,544. Roanoke Valley Association of Realtors president Walter Grewe said the region only has half of the supply of available houses as they had in previous years. โWeโre seeing multiple-offer situations or people coming in and paying full price right off the bat,โ Grewe said.
Franklin County housing shortage problematic for buyers, renters, regionโs growth
FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. โ If you want to buy or rent a home in Franklin County, you might be out of luck. The county initiated the study to look at housing options in Ferrum and across the county. Franklin County resident and landlord Cindy Stiles has seen the shortage firsthand. Youโve got to have a place to put people of all economic levels.โGlynn Dudley and his family own properties in Franklin County and never have trouble finding renters. In Ferrum, Sandy said thereโs a need for more senior housing options.
