CAMPBELL COUNTY, Va. – Though they weren’t hit as hard as other areas, Central Virginia is dealing with the latest round of wintry weather. ALTAVISTA, Va. – The Altavista Fire Company said that a house fire that happened Wednesday night is still under investigation. At 11:39 p.m., crews responded to a house fire on the 1100 block of 7th Street with reports of trapped victims. Units arrived at the scene to find a two-story structure with heavy smoke showing from the second-floor windows. Authorities said the victim on the roof was quickly rescued by a ladder and crews conducted searches to ensure no other people were inside the house. A firefighter suffered minor injuries from the incident and was evaluated at LGH before being released shortly after.

CAMPBELL COUNTY, Va. – Virginia State Police have released the name of the woman who died early Monday morning. The crash remains under investigation. One person is dead after a crash early Monday morning on Wards Road, according to Virginia State Police. At 1:17 a.m., Virginia State Police responded to a crash involving a pedestrian near Lynchburg Highway. The pedestrian died at the scene and police said the crash remains under investigation.

Authorities are searching for Calvin Furline, 27, of Hurt for entering a dwelling with the intent to commit larceny, assault and battery or another felony violation. But after 25 years on the job, Altavista Athletic Director Dean Hubbard is retiring. “My dad was a teacher and coach for 39 years and it’s just something I always wanted to do was be a teacher and coach,” Hubbard explained. She then guided the girls basketball program to the same feat in 2004. The boys basketball program also rose to the occasion, winning a title in 2004 then storming through for 3-peat from 2013-2015, under coach Mike Cartolaro. Our son Richard played for Coach Cartolaro in the basketball program and had a chance to be on the back-to-back state championship teams,” Hubbard said.

Former Altavista and Virginia star defensive back Juan Thornhill has been selected by the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2nd round of the NFL Draft. Thornhill was the 31st pick of the second round, or the 62rd overall pick. His 2018 campaign included 98 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, and 7 pass breakups. Thornhill was a star quarterback in high school at Altavista, helping lead his team to back-to-back VHSL 1A state championships. He was a starter and star on the Colonels basketball team, that captured 3 VHSL 1A state titles.
