Last day to fill out survey on ways to honor African American history in Lynchburg

About 300 responses have been submitted

LYNCHBURG, Va. – April 23 was the last day to submit your ideas on ways Lynchburg should honor African American history.

Some survey questions were open-ended, while others were specifically about Fifth Street and Memorial Avenue.

The Lynchburg City Council considered renaming the roadway after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. two months ago.

The street received the honorary designation of MLK Jr. Boulevard in 2005, but this could make the change permanent.

Reid Wodicka, interim city manager, said they received about 300 responses.

“The next step, of course, is to analyze that data. We will then have an appropriately distant town hall event. That may be something in person, it may be something virtual, or it may be both,” said Wodicka.

The event will be scheduled for early summer, then recommendations will be presented to city council.
