Amid virus outbreak at jail, sheriff institutes mask mandate
DANVILLE, Va. โ A Virginia sheriff has instituted a face-covering policy for workers at a local jail and issued masks to inmates amid a widening COVID-19 outbreak. A total of 49 inmates at the Danville City Jail were infected as of Saturday afternoon, Sheriff Mike Mondul told the Register & Bee. Earlier in the week, Mondul told the newspaper that not all jail employees had been wearing masks. When asked why there wasnโt a mask policy before now, he said there were no issues before Wednesday. โWe had a mask policy, but the wearing of masks was not mandatory,โ Mondul wrote in an email on Saturday.

Authorities said that all inmates at the jail and jail annex as well as the deputies have been issued face masks. ORIGINAL STORYOne inmate at the Danville City Jail tested positive for coronavirus on Wednesday, according to the Danville Sheriffโs Office. The inmate was seen by the jail doctor and isolated in an area of the jail suitable for quarantine, Mondul said. Danville City Jail is in the process of collaborating with the health department to review best practice procedures, according to Mondul.
