Weekend starts with some rain and mountain freezing rain

A winter storm may impact the area on Tuesday

Weekend weather conditions and precipitation

ROANOKE, Va. – Friday was a much quieter weather day across the area with sunshine and warm temperatures. However, things will again change for us tonight. There are already showers to the west, which are expected to bring scattered rain showers and the possibility of freezing rain, especially north of Interstate 64. The inclement weather might begin moving in around midnight but it is a fast-moving and pretty weak storm system.

The rain will ease by Saturday afternoon, with a chance of squeezing out a bit of sunshine. However, Saturday night might bring more spotty showers from the mid-evening hours through about 3 a.m. Then Sunday will be dry under a nice mix of sun and clouds. Great news for any Super Bowl plans you may have. Temperatures this weekend will reach the 40s and 50s.

Temperature trends and variations

Temperatures this weekend will be close to average. However, colder air is on the way. Temperatures next week will fall into the 30s and 40s, with the coldest day being Tuesday.

Upcoming weather predictions and alerts

A few showers will be possible on Monday. Tuesday could be a day to keep an eye on as a potential winter storm approaches. This storm is predicted to bring a mix of snow, ice, and rain, so a Weather Authority Alert Day will likely need to be issued. A few lingering rain/snow showers will be possible on Wednesday with mainly just rain in the forecast for Thursday. Because of all the precipitation we’ve seen lately, that could lead to the potential for some flooding. Lots to keep an eye over the next week or two.
