Incoming weather system
ROANOKE, Va. – A storm system will move in tonight and remain with us into at least part of the day on Thursday. It will bring mainly a cold rain to the area. But...areas along and north of I-64 will see some freezing rain and maybe even a little bit of sleet. That is where we have a Winter Weather Advisory in effect.
The rain is likely to be at its heaviest from around midnight through Thursday morning, though there might still be some leftover stray showers or thunderstorms in the afternoon. We may also see some skies clearing out late Thursday afternoon as well.
Temperature changes on the horizon
Big changes are forecasted in the temperature department. Expect tomorrow’s highs to be around 20 degrees warmer than today, reaching the lower 60s. We will remain warm again on Friday, but will cool down on Saturday. We’ll warm up again on Sunday...only to have some cold air rush in for much of next week. So, yes the temperature roller coaster continues.
Looking at the extended forecast
The next 7 days look “unsettled,” with ongoing storm systems making their way from the Pacific to the East Coast. We’ll be for the most part dry on Friday under a mix of sun and clouds. But another round of rain may move in as soon as Friday night...and linger into at least Saturday morning before tapering off. Sunday looks to be the drier of the two weekend days, although a couple of rogue showers will still be possible. As the next work week begins, temperatures will dip into the 30s and 40s on Monday and Tuesday. There will also be the chance for a wintry mix both days. Too early to go into much more detail than that, but at this time it looks like we could see all precipitation types...from rain to ice to snow. Please stay tuned.
