Bundle up, Southwest and Central Virginia!

Cold tonight, not as cold tomorrow

Frosty forecasts and slight warm-ups

ROANOKE, Va. – Our Wednesday was marked with sunshine and very cold temperatures. The winds did calm down throughout the day, but they won’t be light. After weaker winds tonight, the wind may be back on the uptick again on Thursday. We’ll have gusts anywhere between 15-35 mph. We will warm things up a bit on Thursday and Friday with highs ranging between 40-45 degrees, although it will be cooler in the mountains. As a matter of fact, another clipper type will impact the area a bit Thursday afternoon/evening and bring the west slopes more snowfall accumulations. Most of the snow stays in WV, but there will some spillover into parts of the NRV and Highlands.

Friday looks dry and a little warmer than Thursday.

Looking ahead: weekend weather and a cold front alert

As we approach the weekend, be ready for another cold front. Precipitation will start in the morning, perhaps as a mix (snow, sleet, and freezing rain) in the mountains...and rain farther east. It won’t take long for rain to be main precipitation for everyone on Saturday. We may then get a break Saturday night, only to have a secondary spoke of energy swing through on Sunday. That one may start as rain before changing to snow at some point Sunday afternoon, tapering off Sunday night. So, all types of precipitation will be possible this weekend. And that weekend cold front will usher VERY cold air next week.

Temperatures next week will likely be in the 10s and 20s with some mornings starting in the single digits. Brrr! While early week looks dry and pretty sunny, later next week could be a different story. More wintry weather is possible anytime between Wednesday and Friday of next week, so please stay tuned.
