ROANOKE, Va. – Extreme wind chill has returned to the region thanks to an area of low pressure to our north funneling in cold air and winds.
There are cold weather advisories in place until 10 a.m. Wednesday morning for the highlighted counties.
Wind chill values progressively get warmer later Wednesday morning. Below is a look at the 11 a.m. wind chill.
A brief warm-up occurs during the afternoon, but we only feel as warm as about 25 degrees. Once the sun sets, a lower wind chill builds back in.
A small ridge of high pressure builds in around St. Louis and Chicago on Friday. This will cycle out some of the bone-chilling cold air and bring a brief warm-up, though temperatures will still be below average for the time of year.
Another cold front moves in this weekend and brings rain chances to the Commonwealth. Light to moderate scattered showers are possible for much of Saturday. Some snow showers, flurries and a light mix are possible at times, but we are expecting mostly rain this time around.
Once that front passes, our temperatures cool down big time. Here is a look at the temperature outlook from the Climate Prediction Center for next week.
The jet stream will be diving way down bringing the polar vortex with it. If you think it’s cold out there now, just wait until next week.
