ROANOKE, Va. – A Cold Weather Advisory is in effect for areas along and west of the Parkway till 10 a.m. Wednesday and includes the NRV, the Roanoke Valley, and the Alleghany Highlands. Frigid wind chills are forecast all over the area tonight. The coldest conditions will hit the mountains, where “feel-like” temperatures will plunge below zero. Meanwhile, Lynchburg and Southside can expect wind chills feeling like single digits. Please make sure to dress warmly and ensure that pets are protected from the cold, too.
Snow showers and other regional weather impacts
A clipper system moving southeast might bring some snow showers to the mountains of NRV and Highlands late this afternoon into the evening. Most of these snow showers will stay in WV, but a small spillover will be possible here in the Commonwealth...with a light accumulation possible in a few high elevation spots. The upslope snow machine will turn itself off close to midnight.
Looking ahead: Mid-week and beyond
Wednesday is set to start off cold, with temperatures in the teens and wind chills making it feel even colder. Eventually temperatures on Hump Day will hit around 30 degrees. While we will be very cold, it will be dry under mostly sunny skies. The wind will weaken late Wednesday into Wednesday night, only to strengthen again on Thursday. Thursday will see more sun east and more clouds west with a few mountain rain/snow showers later in the day. Temperatures will climb into the lower 40s on Thursday...and by Friday we will reach the upper 40s. We will be dry on Friday under partly to mostly sunny skies.
Precipitation chances increase heading into the weekend, and while Saturday’s forecast leans towards rain, if precipitation starts Friday night, there might be a brief period of a wintry mix. By Sunday, rain could possibly change over to snow before winding down on Sunday night. Have your umbrella handy this weekend. Temperatures on Saturday will top out in the middle 40s, falling to near 40 on Sunday. And early next week, another arctic plunge will head our way and allow temperatures to once again fall into the 20s and 30s.
