Winter storm overview
ROANOKE, Va. – A winter storm is sweeping across Southwest and Central Virginia, bringing snow through just before daybreak Saturday. Some areas are already seeing slush-covered streets. However, the snow coverage varies, and some places have yet to see significant precipitation. But that will change as the evening progresses...everyone will see something out of this. But, unlike most storms, we will see more snow south and less north. So, yes the NRV and Southside will see more snow than the Highlands.
Snowfall amounts will range between a coating-6″. This will be a drier, fluffy snow, so the number of power outages should be lower than the last winter storm.
Weekend weather changes
The weather event is not expected to linger, making for a quick-hitting storm. By the time the sun rises Saturday morning, we are dry...leading to clearing throughout the day. Increasing sunshine is in the forecast, with more sun east and more clouds west. The west slopes will still have the chance for a few snow showers on Saturday, most of us will be dry. However, the winds will increase. Sustained winds from 8-18 mph are likely, with gusts possibly reaching 20 to 40 mph. Those winds will weaken on Sunday.
Sunday looks to be dry, with high pressure returning, ensuring a sunny day from sunrise to sunset. It’s important to note the cold wind chills expected as the weekend progresses, with temperatures feeling like the teens or even single digits in some areas by Sunday morning. By afternoon, though, highs will climb into the 30s and 40s.
Temperature and precipitation forecast
Looking ahead, the beginning of next week may bring a couple of rain/snow showers in the mountains, but overall, most of us will dry next week. Partly to mostly sunny skies look to rule the roost. And while most of us will reach the 40s on Monday, temperatures will again fall into the 20s and 30s on Tuesday and Wednesday.
