Snowy weather expected for Southwest and Central Virginia

Potential travel disruptions with incoming storm system

ROANOKE, Va. – Things are calm for now, but don’t let that fool you. We are watching a storm system that’s set to change our sunny, blue skies very soon.

A system to watch out for

A fast-moving storm system is getting organized over South Texas, and it’s expected to head northeast in a hurry, right towards us in southwest and central Virginia.

This is a winter storm impacting MANY folks. Residents from Dallas to Memphis are already bracing for snow and ice. It’s anticipated that everyone here will encounter snowfall. We could see anywhere from 1 to 4 inches areawide, though a few areas might experience bursts of snow that could push totals a bit higher.

Travel conditions are expected to become quite tricky, as the snow won’t take long to stick because we have been so cold. So, if you’ve got travel plans, it might be wise to rethink them or at the very least proceed with extra caution. The snow will gone close to daybreak on Saturday and believe it or not, we could see some sun returning by Saturday afternoon. This is a fast-moving storm system and the heaviest of the precipitation looks to fall south of us.

Chilly days ahead

Bundle up folks; it’s going to stay cold here for a while. Temperatures will stay in the 30s through the weekend.

By Monday, there might be a brief reprieve, with highs nudging into the 40s. However, more arctic air is expected to sweep in, dropping temperatures back into the 20s and 30s come Tuesday and Wednesday.

What to expect this weekend

For those eager for nicer weather, there is light at the end of the tunnel—literally! We talked already about how we could see some sunshine coming back as soon as near lunch-time Saturday...and Sunday will be mainly sunny. The mountains may have a slight chance for a rain and/or snow showers on Monday and Tuesday, but most of us will be dry all the way through Thursday.

As always, stay up to date with your local weather forecasts to plan ahead! You can share your snowy photos with us on Pin It.

Stay safe and warm, everyone!
