Brace for the cold

More wintry weather headed our way

ROANOKE, Va. – While today has been quieter weather-wise, it’s not quite time to put away those scarves and gloves. Snowflakes did make an appearance in parts of the Highlands and New River Valley earlier in the day. And over the next couple of days, high pressure will attempt to settle in, indicating relatively calm weather at least through Thursday.

Anticipated weather changes

Increasing cold and windy conditions

It’s undeniably breezy out there, and for some, it might even feel outright windy. Gusts have reached over 30 mph in various locations. As you wrap up your day, be prepared for wind chills in the single digits by 11 p.m. When you step out tomorrow morning, it could feel below zero in portions of the Highlands and New River Valley. If not below zero, wind chills are expected to linger in the single digits and tens across the region.

This chilly trend seems to be sticking around for Wednesday and Thursday, with blustery conditions expected to persist. However, winds might ease slightly come Friday before picking up again potentially by next week.

Detailed forecast breakdowns

Wednesday and Thursday outlook

When the sun rises on Wednesday, anticipate mostly sunny conditions in areas like Lynchburg, Southside, and Roanoke. Meanwhile, those in the mountains might see a mix of sun and clouds. Thursday’s forecast promises more sunshine across the board, keeping things dry for the entire state. Temperatures will only reach the lower 30s on Wednesday, falling into the upper 20s on Thursday.

Weekend weather events

Storm system on the horizon

We stay dry through most of the day Friday. However late in the day into the first part of Saturday, another storm system will move in. This next low pressure system looks to bring primarily bringing snow. Perhaps areas further east may see some mixed precipitation (ice) too. While it appears to be a swift-moving system with not a ton of moisture associated with it, there is certainly the potential for some accumulating snow in many areas, especially Friday night. The precipitation should end Saturday afternoon, with a dry end to the weekend come Sunday. And early next week looks pretty quiet with temperatures not quite as cold.
