Clipper through tonight, then another storm impact beginning Sunday

More snow, ice, and rain on the way

ROANOKE, Va. – The NRV, Highlands, and even portions of the Roanoke Valley have been dealing with a clipper on Friday. This system is causing snow squalls, especially in mountainous areas. Snow accumulation varies but ranges from nothing to about 1.5 to 2 inches. The impact from this clipper will lessen throughout the rest of the evening. But will be a cold and windy night!

Saturday and upcoming weather system: transitioning from cold to messy

Saturday's forecast

Expect bright and sunny conditions for Saturday, though it will remain cold and breezy. As night approaches, clouds will start to thicken, setting the stage for a more impactful weather system.

Sunday to Monday storm

The next system could bring a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain starting on Sunday afternoon, shifting to freezing rain and sleet, and perhaps transitioning into plain rain by later Sunday night for Southside locations. While forecasts show some variability, please prepare for potentially disruptive weather conditions lasting through Monday. We will see more snow north...the Highlands will be the zone to see the most accumulation. While farther south, Southside will be the zone to see the least amount of snow...but the most amount of cold rain. Ice will no doubt be a concern as well. Anywhere from a trace to 0.25″+ of ice is expected. Power outages will be possible and travel will be treacherous during this winter system, so please stay inside if you can. For now, Winter Storm Watches have been posted for the NRV and Highlands and may be expanded farther east. The precipitation will end late Monday.

Temperature overview and look ahead

Temperatures tonight

It’s going to be a cold night with lows falling into the teens and 20s...and it will be windy too. Please bundle up!

Don’t be fooled by the sun we see on Saturday...highs will only reach the low-to-mid 30s! Expect temperatures to drop into 20s and 30s next week, so winter is here to stay for a while. Once that storm system exits early next week, Tuesday through Thursday all look dry. However, another chance for precipitation may move in either next Friday or Saturday. Please stay tuned.
