New Year, new weather: What to expect as 2025 begins

Changing conditions as we welcome 2025

Weather conditions on New Year’s Eve

ROANOKE, Va. – During the day on New Year’s Eve, we had a cold front move through the area. It brought scattered showers and even a few storms with it. There have been a few severe thunderstorm warnings issued, particularly for areas near the Lynchburg zone. As the evening progresses, expect colder air to move in, marking a chillier start to 2025 after the mild end to this year.

New Year’s Eve evening and midnight forecast

For those planning to celebrate as the clock strikes midnight, temperatures are likely to be in the 40s throughout the evening. Most of us will experience dry conditions under partly cloudy skies as we ring in the New Year. However, areas along the I-77 corridor might see a few flurries or light snow showers, especially as you head north into West Virginia. West slope snow showers will continue into part of New Year’s Day.

New Year’s Day overview

Moving into New Year’s Day, prepare for a cool start with temperatures in the 30s first thing. and only reaching about 45 degrees for the day’s high. It’s also going to be windy, with wind gusts ranging from 30 to 50 mph. A Wind Advisory is in effect for areas along and west of the Parkway. So, yes...blustery conditions are expected for everyone. Simply put on New Year’s Day, we will see more sun east (mainly sunny) and a little more cloud cover west (partly sunny).

Looking ahead: Weather for the rest of the week

The chill doesn’t leave us just yet, as Thursday brings dry conditions before a few more rain and/or snow showers move in on Friday. The mountains will have the best chance to see some snowflakes on Friday. Colder air is set to follow this disturbance, keeping highs in the 30s for the weekend. Keep an eye on Sunday night into Monday, when wintry weather might make an appearance. We’ll need to watch this time-frame very closely, as we could see some snow changing over to a mix, ending as a cold rain for some.
