ROANOKE, Va. – After a dry and pleasantly warm Monday, there are some notable shifts to prepare for heading into the rest of the week.
Upcoming rain showers and New Year's Eve weather
We’ll start out our Tuesday (New Year’s Eve) with some fog, otherwise the first half of the day will be dry. But, keep those umbrellas handy as rain showers move in from the west. These showers are expected to make their appearance from tomorrow afternoon and could linger into part of the evening. The best chance for rain will lie between about 1 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. I am cautiously optimistic that we will ring in 2025 with just some residual cloud cover in place, as it looks like we will be dry by midnight. Temperatures will start in the 30s and 40s with highs climbing into the 50s. We’ll have one more day of above average temperatures.
New Year's Day and rest of the week outlook
The weather takes another turn on New Year’s Day itself, which could greet us with cold and breezy conditions. Though colder weather is expected, New Year’s Day should remain dry for most of us under a mix of sun and clouds. The west slopes may continue to have the chance for some light precipitation in the form of high elevation snow showers. Thursday is dry and cold too, before another weak disturbance impacts us on Friday. That may bring a few light rain/snow showers to the area. The best to see some snowflakes will again lie in the mountains. Temperatures Thursday and Friday will only reach the lower 40s.
Expect a reinforcing shot of cold air by the weekend. Both Saturday and Sunday might see temperatures failing to rise above the 30s. But for now, both days look dry with Saturday seeing more sun than Sunday. Next Monday (especially the first part of the day) will need to monitored closely, as wintry weather may greet some of us early next week.
