Another Arctic blast is headed into southwest and central Virginia

A cold weekend is ahead!

Upcoming weather system: Clipper system impact

ROANOKE, Va. – There’s a clipper-type system on the horizon, coming in from the northwest and bringing some weather changes. Expect some rain and even snow showers as we move into later on Friday and into Friday night. The mountains have a higher likelihood of seeing snow showers with a possibility of light accumulation in some areas. Meanwhile, we can ALL anticipate the cloud cover to continue building up...with cold air moving in for the weekend.

Friday's weather details

Looking ahead to Friday, the day should start off dry with a mix of partly to mostly cloudy skies. It’s after 2 p.m. or 3 p.m. that a few rain and/or snow showers may start to impact the area. The New River Valley and the Highlands are once again the prime spots for snow showers, whereas areas like Lynchburg and Southside could see a few rain showers instead. As for temperatures, Friday will begin in the twenties and thirties, reaching highs only in the mid-40s, which is a little below average for this time of year.

Weekend outlook: Colder days ahead

As the cold front moves through Friday into Friday night, brace yourselves for a chilly weekend. Saturday and Sunday will only reach the middle 30s! BRRRR! Although sunshine will increase on Saturday and Sunday is shaping up to be mostly sunny, don’t be fooled by the blue skies. You’ll need to bundle up all weekend long.

We’ll start to warm things back up a bit just in time for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. But we may have to dodge some rain showers for the upcoming holiday. A White Christmas just does not look to be in the cards for us this year.
