Winter-Weather Impacts Expected Sunday 12/15

Prepare for a wintry mix this weekend

ROANOKE, Va. – A Weather Authority Alert Day has been declared for Sunday due to the arrival of some wintry precipitation. Let’s dive into the details so you know what to expect and how to prepare.

Current weather conditions

Right now, our region is experiencing dry conditions, but it’s chilly, with temperatures in the 30s. In fact, Roanoke is currently at 34 degrees, Martinsville is sitting at 37 degrees, and Blacksburg is at 33 degrees. There’s a slight breeze, around 5 to 6 mph, coming from the east. This chilly air mass is especially significant west of I-81, making us cautious about the upcoming wintry mix.

Upcoming wintry weather

Looking ahead, there’s a possibility of wintry precip late Saturday evening, continuing into the early morning hours of Sunday. Winter Weather Advisories have been issued for the New River Valley, some parts of the Roanoke Valley, and Highland Zones. These advisories are effective until 7 p.m. on Sunday. There’s also a winter storm warning for Pocahontas County, WV, where snow and ice are expected.

For areas like the New River Valley and Highland zones, ice accumulation could be between 0.1 to 0.2 inches. The wintry mix is expected to switch over to primarily rain by Sunday afternoon, which should help reduce travel disruptions as the day progresses.

Your forecast overview

Sunday’s weather will start with a mix of precip, eventually transitioning to rain by lunchtime. A surface trough, essentially a weak cold front, is expected to pass, ending the rain by 10 p.m. on Sunday. Despite the precipitation wrapping up, clouds will linger into Monday. Looking ahead, expect rain chances to continue on a daily basis through the coming Friday.
