ROANOKE, Va. – Roanoke, Danville and Lynchburg all officially hit the upper 90s Wednesday afternoon prior to some late day storms.
The front that produced those late day storms sags south of the area Thursday, leaving us with very isolated activity late morning into the afternoon.
More importantly, it allows the heat to take a back seat for a little bit.
Highs will be pretty typical of late June by Thursday afternoon.
We expect similar afternoon temperatures and a few stray late day showers/storms Friday. This builds ahead of another front that will lead to more showers and storms Saturday. Storms Sunday will start drifting east along the front.
There’s a lot of moisture available in the atmosphere, which means that anything that forms will produce heavy rain. That may not be a bad thing, as a large chunk of the area falls under a drought.

Humidity levels drop early next week, leading to a more pleasant/tolerable feel to the air.
Heat likely builds ahead of the 4th of July with high pressure camped over the Eastern U.S.
Storms will then be possible on the northern edge of the high by the 4th itself.
