ROANOKE, Va. – It’s the first Monday of February, and the weather is - well- mundane. We start the day with some frost on windshields, but sunshine will bring us back into the 50s (much like this past weekend).
High pressure will promote sinking air, meaning clear skies through at least Wednesday. It will also deflect most rain to our west this week.
As high pressure breaks down, the system that produced an atmospheric river in California will move coast to coast. We won’t see the life-threatening flooding or feet of mountain snow, but it may set off a wetter weather pattern at times.
During that time, high temperatures will be in the 60s later this week into the weekend.
Snow-lovers are close to throwing in the white flag. Keep in mind, however, that we can and do get late season snows (especially during El Niño winters like this one).
The Climate Prediction Center’s Week 3-4 outlook shows colder-than-average weather across the southern U.S. along with the possibility of a continued storm track.
While we’re not tracking any one specific storm, this is a trend we’ll follow later into the month and into early March.
