NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) has released their latest monthly global climate report and the organization says March 2022 was the fifth warmest on record, globally.
The average global land and ocean surface temperature for March was 1.71°F above the 20th-century average of 54.9°F. It was the 46th consecutive March and 447th consecutive month with temperatures above the 20th-century average.

NOAA NCEI also noted that the Antarctic sea ice coverage almost hit a record low for March at 1.09 million square miles. Only March 2017 had a lower sea ice coverage in the 44-year record.
In our area, it also was one of the warmest Marches on record. Roanoke had the warmest March when compared to history, as the Star City’s average temperature was 52.7°F. That ranks as the eighth-warmest on record.
