Taubman Museum of Art in Roanoke and Virginia Museum of Natural History in Martinsville are finalists for the Institute of Museum and Library Servicesโ (IMLS) National Medal of Museum and Library Service. They are two of 30 museums and libraries from across the country and the only ones from Virginia. Dr. Joe Keiper, executive director of Virginia Museum of Natural History is feeling that same energy. In 2020, the museum staffโs passion for the community could be seen at drive-thru museum experiences across Virginia.

All the artists are Latinx or Latin Americans living or working in the U.S. and this exhibition amplifies their voices and experiences. On Tuesday Friendship residents painted ceiling tiles that will be put in hospital rooms and in the corridor of different Carilion Clinic locations. Studies show art in a clinical setting can help reduce anxiety and improve blood pressure. โOur residents enjoy doing anything that serves the community, think it gives them a good feeling and theyโre having fun too so thatโs the important thing,โ said , Friendship Retirement Community Activities Coordinator Pat Walters. Weโre doing it by building so folks will be painting with their neighbors.โThe Healing Ceiling Tiles project is part of a partnership between Carilion and the Taubman Museum of Art.

Over the past six decades, the Taubman Museum of Arts annual Sidewalk Art Show has attracted thousands of visitors. One is an online shop that already has more than 100 works for sale from 25 artists, while the main event will happen Aug. 15-16. Continuing that tradition as traditions evolve, especially during this time frame, to an online event is key not only for the museum but for the community and for the artists that are involved, said Cindy Petersen, executive director of the Taubman Museum of Art. Taubman Museum will now require guests 10 or older to wear a mask. Visitors can enjoy some traditional Taubman Museum favorites as well as the new Celestial Centennial exhibition featuring art by Roanoke native, Dorothy Gillespie. Taubman Museum is constantly coming up with new ways people can experience art, touchless. While closed, Taubman Museum did community outreach like delivering art cards to hospital workers, patients and to those living in retirement homes.

The museum will be open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday noon to 5 p.m. The pool at the Holiday Lake 4-H Educational Center opens to the public today. The center was able to do this after summer camps were canceled because of the pandemic. The pool is open daily through Labor Day.

The Taubman Museum of Art in downtown Roanoke will reopen on July 3. Face coverings will be mandatory for all staff and guests 10 years and up and the number of guests will be limited and social distancing will be enforced. The museum will also be cleaned and sanitized regularly.

The Taubman Museum of Arts doors may be closed, but theyre still finding ways to share art with the community in launching a new outreach program called Brush Pals. Brush Pals provides weekly art kits for children served through Feeding Southwest Virginia. On Monday, the first round of art kits were distributed along with meals for those at the Community Solutions Center on Melrose Avenue. Going forward, Brush Pals will also be distributed to the Rescue Mission and various retirement centers. The Taubman hopes to impact 20,000 people throughout southwest Virginia through the end of August.

As we've reported, city leaders are making across the board cuts to everything from library services to human services and maintenance. The Taubman Museum of Art will join Feeding Southwest Virginia for a Childrens Feeding Program. They will hand out meals and snacks, as well as sculpture art kits, with lessons on sculpture, modeling clay and an activity sheet. Pittsylvania County will reopen its public offices today.
