ROANOKE, Va. – One person is dead after a pedestrian crash in Northwest Roanoke Friday night. At about 8:30 p.m., Roanoke Police responded to a report of a vehicle crash involving a pedestrian on the 5100 block of Williamson Road NW. Upon arrival, officers found a man lying in the roadway with what they said appeared to be serious injuries. Roanoke Fire-EMS transported the man to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries shortly after. The driver of the vehicle remained on the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.

Roanoke Fire-EMS’s Swift Water Team is assisting Roanoke County PD and Roanoke County Fire & Rescue with a body recovery operation at Niagara Dam. Authorities have identified the body that was found in the Roanoke River in Vinton last month. Police said the body was originally found on Jan. 26 near the Niagara Dam and has been identified as Dolph Dellinger, who was reported missing out of Roanoke. According to the Roanoke County Police Department, officers tried to find and notify his family to no avail. Authorities said the investigation into how Dellinger got into the river is being handled by the Roanoke City Police Department.

ROANOKE, Va. – Roanoke Fire-EMS transported eight people in northwest Roanoke Sunday early morning for injuries resulting from carbon monoxide poisoning. Authorities said that when crews arrived, they found multiple people in a house garage experiencing varying levels of consciousness and symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning. Crews located a propane tank and a heating element being used without proper ventilation, causing a carbon monoxide build-up in the home. Eight patients were transported to the Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Some of the patients have life-threatening levels of carbon monoxide in their bloodstreams.

Usually a local church makes the Roanoke firefighters and EMTs a home-cooked meal so the crew doesn’t have to worry about going out on a cRoanoke Fire-EMS crew members share a meal together on Thanksgiving Day, donated by a local church. But this year, because of COVID-19, the Fellowship Community Church partnered with a restaurant to have the meal safely delivered so that the crew was able to still enjoy a meal together. “That one moment where you know you truly helped someone, makes all the sleepless nights, all the long days, all the worn down, beat down, break down days and nights, that makes it worth it,” said crew member Nathan Bryant. The fire station is usually open to the public on Thanksgiving.

ROANOKE, Va. – Cooking fires are three times more likely to happen on Thanksgiving Day, so Roanoke Fire-EMS has some tips before you hit the kitchen, especially if you plan to fry your turkey this year. If you’re frying a turkey, thaw it completely first, and pat it dry. Pre-measure how much oil you need to slightly cover the turkey once it’s in the pot. When the oil is hot, very slowly place the turkey in the pot while wearing protective gloves. The biggest mistakes you can make are putting in too much oil, putting the turkey in frozen or putting the turkey in too quickly.

With more people staying indoors due to the pandemic and the holidays approaching, cooking fires are common right now, according to Roanoke Fire-EMS. ROANOKE, Va. – Roanoke Fire-EMS has replaced two of its most essential lifesaving items. The department recently received two new medic trucks, which will be housed in Fire Stations 1 and 2, respectively. The new Roanoke Fire-EMS medic trucks are larger than their predecessors and feature an advanced air filtration system. Roanoke Fire-EMS Lt. Andy Fleming said the new equipment replaced trucks that had more than 100,000 miles, including one left inoperable because of maintenance issues. ROANOKE, Va. – A firefighting father-son duo has had a busy summer in Roanoke. Rob and Brandon Bolton continue a longstanding tradition of family members who serve the Roanoke Fire-EMS department. Lieutenant Rob Bolton has been fighting fires in Roanoke for more than 20 years, so when it came time for his son Brandon to pick a career, the choice was clear. Lieutenant Rob Bolton and his son Brandon fought their first fire together this month. When Roanoke Fire-EMS got a call to an apartment fire on Westside Boulevard on July 21 , the Boltons were in for a surprise.

One firefighter was sent to the hospital to be treated for heat exhaustion earlier this week after battling flames in a house fire on Stewart Avenue. To help prevent heat exhaustion, the city brings in help from across the county line. Roanoke County Fire Captain Chad Wheeler said combing resources helps keep both fire companies safe. The City of Salem and Botetourt county also share a regional fire partnership with the City of Roanoke and Roanoke County.

Roanoke Fire-EMS Chief David Hoback said the new Fire Station 7 in Grandin Village is still on track to be ready at the end of the year. The new Station 7 stands where the old firehouse had been for 94 years. Hoback hopes the station will blend the charm of the old structure with the needs of a modern fire department. When units arrived, they found that a construction worker, who was working on the home had fallen into a void area under the house after experiencing a medical episode, according to Roanoke Fire-EMS. There was no exit where the man fell and he wasnt easily accessible from the floor that he fell through. To get him out, the departments Technical Rescue Team had to cut through an exterior wall.

Just over two decades ago, history was made as the first two women became firefighters and EMTs for Roanoke city. "I was not expecting the microscope to be on me the way it was," said Roanoke Fire-EMS Deputy Chief Marci Stone. Stone continues blazing the trail for women like Emily Turner, a firefighter-EMT who just graduated from recruit school two months ago. Turner is one of only six uniformed women working for Roanoke Fire-EMS. According to the most recent data available from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2018, only 5% of firefighters are women.
