Monday was the first day of in-person learning for all students. Students are required to wear masks, stay socially distant and there are air purifiers in every classroom. Since there are nearly 7,000 students in the district, officials are slightly concerned about having so many students in one place at one time. “It is critical because unless those social and emotional needs can be met, that’s going to impact the academics,” said Muse.

Ralph Northam announced that it’s time to begin working to get students back in the classroom safely. The Virginia Department of Education released its new guidance for schools at 3 p.m. on Thursday. The emphasis will change from “school should be closed” to “schools need to be open,” according to Northam. 10 News reported Northam would announce this change last week; however, the VDOE later rolled back that statement.
