ROANOKE, Va. – Carilion Clinic closed its NICU Tuesday, so no one will be permitted to visit Carilion Children’s NICU. Dr. Kimberly Dunsmore, the chair of Carilion Children’s Hospital, said the purpose of the decision is to protect these vulnerable patients from any exposure to the coronavirus. The move is likely to cause anxiety and fear for NICU parents. Carilion Children’s NICU is working with mothers to continue to provide breast milk for their babies through a coordinated drop off program. Labor and delivery patients are allowed one visitor during their stay, including during the birth.

ROANOKE, Va. - Babies in the NICU at Carilion Children's Hospital in Roanoke are ready for Halloween thanks to some volunteers and adorable costumes. This will be the babies' first spooky holiday, but they have to spend it in the hospital. That's why volunteers from the Carilion Children's Parent Advisory Board made 80 costumes out of felt for the little ones to wear and cheer up their families. One mom, Darrah Phillips, was excited that her little boy, Greyson, who weighs just under 3 pounds, got to dress up with his big brother. This is the first time the board has made these costumes, and they plan to do it again next year.

Twin nurses at a Georgia hospital are seeing double. Identical twins Tara Drinkard and Toni Howard work at the same hospital, Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center, in Georgia. But the sisters had never helped deliver a baby together until recently, when Rebecca Williams, pregnant with twins, needed a cesarean section delivery. "I saw her in the hallway and said, 'We're having a twin delivery,''' Drinkard told WXIA-TV . "It's a pretty cool experience having them in there and being able to ask them questions," dad Brannan Williams said of the twin nurses.

At Children's Mercy Hospital, 36 NICU nurses are all giving birth this year. "The parents would joke when they see so many pregnant people walking around, like, 'Do you have to be pregnant to work here?'"
