COLUMBIA, S.C. – The city of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, was motivated by race when it created a traffic plan designed to “suck the fun” out of Black Bike Week, a federal jury has found. But the same jury sided against the bikers, saying the city probably would have imposed the plan anyway. The Black bikers have been particularly frustrated by a 23-mile (37-kilometer) one-way no-exit traffic chute that funnels them out of town during the peak nights of Atlantic Beach Bikefest, otherwise known as Black Bike Week. The NAACP has tussled in court with the city, as well as local restaurants and a hotel, over their responses to the Black bikers for nearly two decades. That settlement expired in 2015, when the new traffic plan was established.

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Motorcycle clubs roar into Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, each May for separate week-long rallies, one mostly white, the other mostly Black. White bikers rolling in days earlier for Harley Week each May are treated differently, Black bikers say. In opening arguments last week to five Black and four white jurors, an NAACP lawyer said Myrtle Beach during Bikefest is “like a city under martial law," The Sun News of Myrtle Beach reported. The Atlantic Beach event soon sprawled into nearby towns, including Myrtle Beach, where most of the 35,000 residents are white. Myrtle Beach city and Chamber of Commerce officials refused to talk about the trial.

MYRTLE BEACH, Va. – A South Carolina beach town has renewed its mask mandate as coronavirus cases trend downward following a spike linked to the popular tourist destination this summer. Myrtle Beach on Thursday extended through Sept. 30 the July executive order mandating face coverings to be worn in public places, according to the city’s website. In June and July, some coronavirus clusters in other states, including West Virginia and New Jersey, were linked to vacationers, wedding attendees and others returning from trips to Myrtle Beach. Horry County, which contains Myrtle Beach, also saw a spike in cases. Since then, data shows the county has seen a downward trend in case numbers, according to The Sun News.

ROANOKE, Va. – The Virginia Department of Health is lifting a self-quarantine recommendation for those who have recently traveled to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Molly O’Dell with the Roanoke-Alleghany Health Districts said local case numbers linked to Myrtle Beach have significantly dropped. As 10 News has reported, numerous local cases of the virus were linked to people who traveled to the beach and then came back. O’Dell said the department of health had the restrictions in place to treat the cases as if they were an outbreak. O’Dell said they also lifted the recommendation as cases in the Horry County area (where Myrtle Beach is located) are lower than they have been over the last month.

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. Hurricane Isaias has made landfall near Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina, according to the National Hurricane Center. The Hurricane Center said it expected the storm to make landfall early Tuesday near southern North Carolina. Still, on this part of the South Carolina and North Carolina coasts that has been affected to varying degrees by seven tropical storms or hurricanes since 2014, residents weren't panicking. Up the coast in southern North Carolina, high winds from Isaias inner core knocked down trees and power lines, blocking roads. Farther up the coast into North Carolina, the hurricane center predicted storm surges of 3 to 5 feet (0.9 to 1.5 meters) when Isaias moves onshore.

ROANOKE, Va. The Virginia Warriors Elite AAU 14-and-under basketball team from Roanoke safely traveled to Myrtle Beach over the weekend for the National Travel Basketball Association Championship. While there, they defeated teams from the likes of Charlotte, Washington D.C. and even Kentucky to win the NTBA National title. Good news for anyone planning vacations to Myrtle Beach: Coronavirus cases linked to the popular vacation destination are declining. As weve reported, numerous local cases of the virus have been linked to people who traveled to the beach and then came back. Other parts of the state saw a spike in cases linked to Myrtle Beach, leading the Virginia Department of Health to recommend people quarantine for two weeks after coming back. By the first of August, were hoping to be able to discontinue our recommendation, Roanoke Alleghany Health District Director Dr. Molly ODell said. Right now, our hope date for that is the third of August.Other states have also reported coronavirus cases linked to Myrtle Beach.

SALEM, Va. – More parts of Virginia are now open under Phase Three of the state’s reopening plan, but Gov. Northam decided to keep bar seating at restaurants closed for the indefinite future because of social distancing concerns. Bob Rotanz, owner of Mac & Bob’s Restaurant in Salem, told 10 News he was excited to have customers back at his bar seating. “It seemed like when they talked about the flare ups, whether in Myrtle Beach, Florida, Texas, or wherever, the word, ‘bar’ kept coming in there. I’m really not surprised...disappointed, but not surprised.”Although bar seating is off limits, restaurants no longer have to limit their capacity, as long as every group is at least six feet apart.

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – If you have a trip planned to North Myrtle anytime soon, make sure to pack a mask. The North Myrtle Beach City Council passed an emergency ordinance on Tuesday which requires people to wear masks in certain places, including retail businesses like grocery stores and pharmacies. The ordinance goes into effect at 12 p.m. on Thursday. Plus, all restaurants, retail businesses and government offices must require their employees to wear masks at all times while having face-to-face interaction with the public. Each day of a continuing violation would be considered a separate offense, according to the ordinance.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – A death investigation is underway after police found two Roanoke Valley men dead inside a pickup truck in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, on Wednesday night. The 2007 Chevy Silverado had been parked in the same place since Father’s Day, according to the man who called 911. Police found 29-year-old Frank Arnold Jr. and 23-year-old John Keaton dead inside the truck, according to the police report. Police are investigating this incident as a death investigation and a drug overdose. Horry County, South Carolina Deputy Coroner Darris Fowler told 10 News that there is no foul play in the two deaths.

United Airlines is suspending its service to Myrtle Beach, effective on July 6, WMBF is reporting. ROANOKE, Va. – 10 News is working for you to follow up on local coronavirus cases linked to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. According to the Virginia Department of Health, as of Wednesday afternoon, there were 47 cases in the Roanoke-Alleghany Health District linked to the popular beach destination. All of those people recently came back from Myrtle Beach. “Our recommendation is if somebody goes to Myrtle Beach, they should self-quarantine when they get back,” said Roanoke-Alleghany Health District Director Dr. Molly O’Dell. As with all coronavirus cases, contact tracing is being done but O’Dell said that’s not always easy with cases like this.

When some return, they are testing positive for the coronavirus, according to the Virginia Department of Health. One travel destination in particular that’s seeing this happen is Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Twenty-seven people have returned to the Roanoke City and Alleghany Health Districts from Myrtle Beach and tested positive for the coronavirus, according to VDH. “One of the significant locations people are going and coming back positive over and over again is Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. So we are actually suggesting that people who come back quarantine themselves for 14 days because we’ve had so many positives come back from Myrtle Beach,” said Dr. Molly O’Dell, the communicable disease director for the Roanoke City and Alleghany Health Districts.

It turns out the SUV's owner had lent it to his cousin so that guy wouldn't have to ride his motorcycle in the bad weather, the owner told CNN affiliate WMBF. So, the owner's cousin "got on the beach and started driving it," the owner told WMBF. Then I called (my cousin) and spoke to him and he told me exactly what happened," the Jeep's owner told the station. Workers used a backhoe loader Friday morning to tow the Jeep away, video posted by Myrtle Beach police shows.
