Video of Richard Wilbanks rescuing his puppy Gunner from the jaws of the gator went viral last month. “I didn’t even realize when I came up out of the water that I still had it in my mouth,” Wilbanks laughs. The Lee County Sheriff’s Office acknowledged Gunner’s bravery Tuesday, making him part of the Deputy Dogs team. Now the pup and his owners will assist the sheriff’s office teaching children about safety.

WISE COUNTY, Va. – A Lee County man is dead after a fatal motorcycle crash in Wise County Saturday night. Virginia State Police said the crash happened at about 11 p.m. on Route 58A at the Wise County and Lee County Line, but police weren’t notified until 12:08 a.m. early Sunday morning. According to authorities, a 2005 Victory motorcycle was traveling east on Route 58A when it slid off the right side of the highway and hit the guardrail. The motorcyclist, Robert A. Phillips II, 34, of Pennington Gap, was thrown off the motorcycle and died at the scene, police say. The crash remains under investigation.

LEE COUNTY, Va. – Virginia State Police are investigating a single vehicle crash in Lee County. The crash happened just after 10 p.m. Friday on Old Route 58. Police said A 2005 Dodge 1500 pickup truck was traveling east on Old Route 58 when it ran off the right side of the road near Route 708. The driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle. The driver, Michael W. Day, 57, of Big Stone Gap, Va., died at the scene.

LEE COUNTY, Va. – Virginia State Police have identified the victim in a deputy-involved crash last week in Lee County. One person is dead and a sheriff’s deputy is recovering after a crash in Lee County on Friday afternoon. Shortly before 1:30 p.m., a Lee County sheriff’s deputy was responding to an emergency call and traveling east on Route 58 when a vehicle pulled out in front of the vehicle, according to state police. State police said the deputy swerved to avoid the vehicle, but the two collided on Route 58 in the 48000 block of Veterans Memorial Highway. The driver that pulled out in front of the deputy died from his injuries shortly after he arrived at Lonesome Pine Hospital.

FORT MYERS, Fla. - A Florida man must spend 18 months in a residential drug treatment program after stealing and crashing a golf cart at a regional airport. Lee County court records show 42-year-old Robert Gallegos pleaded no contest Wednesday to grand theft and other charges. Besides drug treatment, he was sentenced to four years of probation and must pay restitution. Authorities say Gallegos went for a joyride in June at the Page Field airport in Fort Myers. He eventually crashed the golf cart and fled on foot.
