But after a quiet 2020, the Glenvar Highlanders took to the field Thursday for the first time in over a year. There’s certainly a lot of differences between starting the football season in August and February. There’s still snow in the bleachers, but there’s no circumstance too outrageous for the Highlanders to abide by in order to play. “As long as we get to play football everyone will be happy,” defensive end Blake Custer said.

That's why the Roanoke County School District installed a new turf field earlier in August. "First game on the new field, you don't want to start that off with a loss, that's never, that's never good. It'll be used for high school soccer, middle school athletics, and the district may rent out the field to recreational organizations. "It's meaningful and I think having a surface like this in this stadium and our community, is really important to me, it's really important to my family, and it's really important to our community."

"People are just buying in to our mentality here and our work ethic and having that mindset throughout," said Glenvar head coach Kevin Clifford. The Highlanders have had double-digit wins in four of the past five seasons, including a state championship in 2014. "We're just going to come out, have a good season, hopefully win a few ball games but, if nothing else we know we're going to work. We're going to be competitive and when people play us, they're going to feel it," said Street.
