As Americans celebrate Juneteenth on Monday, local historians are sharing the history of our country’s newest federal holiday.

The second annual Juneteenth celebration was held at the Sharswood Manor and Estate Sunday.

On Saturday, the Roanoke Culture Collective came together to celebrate unity and family at Eureka Park.

Most of us are aware of Juneteenth, in that it exists, but there is so much history to know about the celebration.

On Monday, we celebrate Juneteenth, the historical day when enslaved people learned they were free.

The city will be hosting its Third Annual “Lex Rock BV Juneteenth” this Saturday, June 17, at Richardson Park from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Juneteenth is a holiday that marks the end of slavery in the United States. It’s a day that carries weight of the nation’s history and Black business owners in Roanoke are taking time to acknowledge the progression of the Black community.

A Juneteenth celebration packed Eureka Park Saturday to commemorate the day all African-American slaves were freed.

Did you realize that Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States?

Juneteenth, which takes place June 19 each year, is the name for the date in 1865 when Union soldiers freed the remaining slaves in Texas, enforcing the Emancipation Proclamation.

Sunday, Virginia Tech welcomed her for a community conversation. It was part of the University’s 1872 Forward celebration, a 3-day celebration that brings to life how the past shapes the present and leads the university into the future, according to their website.

Celebrating freedom through their voices and feet in Eureka Park, Roanoke residents came together to honor Juneteenth on Saturday.

To celebrate Juneteenth, a local historian guides a group through Gainsboro on Friday, teaching about the neighborhood’s rich African American history.

The event will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Courtland Festival Park

Many people are being educated about and then celebrating Juneteenth for the first time this year.
