Due to Covid-19, animal advocates say this year has been extremely bad for pets with noise phobias. But those noises are relatively constant, experts say, while fireworks are frighteningly sporadic and therefore unexpected. Cats and many other domestic (and wild) animals have sensitive hearing, provided by nature to find and hunt prey.

Carilion Kids Safety coordinator said about 9,000 people in the United States go to the hospital for firework-related accidents each year. With many professional firework shows canceled this year, youll need to keep an extra eye on your kids at any neighborhood shows. Another safety tip is to make sure there is a source of water or fire extinguisher nearby when using any fireworks at home.

Town officials announced Tuesday night they are canceling the annual July 4 fireworks display, as well as all other planned activities and entertainment for the town’s Independence Day Celebration. Officials said the move is a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and Gov. Vinton is also not granting any permits for street closures or stage rentals for events, concerts and festivals during June. Town officials said they look forward to hosting the July 4 fireworks again in 2021.
