HENRY COUNTY, Va. – One K-9 officer’s career in law enforcement is coming to a happy end this week. On Tuesday, the Henry County Sheriff’s Office announced that this is K-9 Smokey’s final week with the department. Smokey came to Henry County from the Netherlands and while working for the Sheriff’s Office, served with two handlers. During her career, she obtained multiple certifications including tracking, apprehension, area searches, building clearance and article searches. Smokey was called upon more than 400 times in her career for her skills, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

HENRY COUNTY, Va. – Authorities say nearly 80 people are facing felony charges after an undercover drug investigation in Henry County. Cars, cash and pills along with fentanyl, heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine and marijuana were all seized during the operation, police say. According to the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, indictments were issued on Nov. 16, and the operation resulted in 176 felony charges on 79 people. HENRY COUNTY, Va. – One of four people charged in connection with the death of a Henry County woman has died in jail, according to the Henry County Sheriff’s Office. The preliminary results from her autopsy showed no obvious signs of trauma or foul play, according to the Sheriff’s Office. On Friday, the Henry County Sheriff's Office executed a narcotics search warrant at 8030 Virginia Ave. in Bassett. The house belongs to Yaquelin Cruz, who lives in Miami, according to the Henry County Sheriff's Office. They seized 409 marijuana plants along with 20 pounds of marijuana buds that were ready for distribution, according to the Henry County Sheriff's Office. HENRY COUNTY, Va. - Two men are in custody after the Henry County Sheriff's Office says they set off an own explosive device that they built. Through the course of the investigation, deputies determined that it wasn't a firecracker that exploded, but rather a small improvised explosive device. Investigators determined that Hundley and a second man built and the improvised explosive device prior to its detonation. Hundley, of Martinsville, was charged with possessing materials to manufacture an explosive device and possessing an explosive device. The Crime Stoppers Program offers rewards up to $2,500 for information related to crime.

HENRY COUNTY, Va. - Authorities charged a 62-year-old woman after someone broke a car window Monday morning in an effort to save a baby locked inside a car in a Walmart parking lot, according to the Henry County Sheriff's Office. Francis Cabiness Kissee, 62, of Martinsville, was charged with one count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. At 11:33 a.m., authorities received a 911 call about the infant locked in the car. By the time they arrived, the window had already been broken and the baby was out of the car. Surveillance video shows that the child was left in the car with the engine off for less than 10 minutes, according to the Sheriff's Office.

HENRY COUNTY, Va. - Authorities say students were never in danger at Bassett High School in Henry County after a bomb threat was discovered Friday afternoon. The threatening message was found at about noon and members of the Henry County Sheriff's Office worked with school officials to ensure students and staff were safe. They said she confessed the threat was a hoax and there was never a threat to the students. Investigators will be working with juvenile intake in regard to possible charges. HENRY COUNTY, Va. - Authorities arrested a man as a result of an undercover drug investigation into the distribution of meth and heroin. The Henry County Sheriff's Office executed a search warrant Thursday at a room at the King's Court Motel in Ridgeway. The Henry County Sheriff's Office says it seized undisclosed quantities of meth and heroin, which will be submitted for analysis. Murphy is at the Henry County Jail, held on a $3,000 secured bond. On Monday, a Henry County grand jury indicted 44 people on 123 felony charges. There were also nine people wanted by the Patrick County Sheriffs Office for narcotics-related offenses who were located and arrested during this operation.

AXTON, Va. - The Henry County Sheriff's Office is now investigating after they say a man was robbed and then shot at a local business. Police say they were called to Image Improvement Barbershop in Axton around 1:41 this afternoon for a man with a gunshot wound. Craig Keen is being treated for gunshot wounds at the UNC-Rockingham Health Care Emergency Room. Police say the suspect fled the scene in a newer model, SUV or hatchback style car with an unknown North Carolina license plate.
