FOREST, Va. – Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest, one of Central Virginia’s strongest ties to the founding fathers, welcomed Independence Day visitors in a different way this year because of covid-19. Poplar Forest guests could still tour the Third President’s former home, but tours were limited to ten people at a time. Everyone at Poplar Forest had to wear a mask, and the museum organized several outdoor activities to keep people at a distance. “A couple of weeks ago, we were very worried that we wouldn’t be able to do anything,” Massie said. However, the house did not open to the public until Independence Day 1986.

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Lynchburg’s Black Lives Matter chapter did not take a day off for the Fourth of July. Instead, it invited people to Miller Park for a discussion about Black independence. This Fourth of July they cared for 87 animals Thursday alone, compared to their 61 patients on an average day. We checked in with shelters in the area who also had quite a few lost pets. And Multnomah County Animal Services took in 21. HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. - A Hillsborough County, Florida deputy sheriff arrested a 35-year-old man on Fourth of July after being accused of pretending to be a law enforcement officer. Hastings told him "he was a law enforcement officer and his credentials were at the office." He told the deputy he could follow him back to the "station" so he could obtain and show him his credentials. Shortly after exiting on Branch Forbes, Hastings was stopped by a Hillsborough County deputy, where he was detained while they interviewed the off-duty deputy. No handcuffs or firearms were located in the vehicle," the Sheriff's Office said.

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. - This Fourth of July has been all about fireworks, good food and good books for some children in Franklin County. Dozens of children spent part of their holiday reading to cats and dogs at the Franklin County Humane Society. "I think it's a good experience for the children," said Anita Scott, director of the Franklin County Humane Society. "If you're struggling, if you're a new reader, if you're learning, reading to pets is a really excellent opportunity to learn, and it's beneficial both ways," sad Jennifer Fleisher, a volunteer. Thursday's program not only gave children a chance to practice reading; volunteers hoped it would also help calm the animals before all of the noise from Fourth of July fireworks.

SALEM, Va. - A man who escaped death three times in World War II is marking a milestone. Retired Gen. Leo LaCasse will blow out 99 candles this Fourth of July. The Purple Heart recipient says he's not surprised at all that he's nearing his 100th birthday. He served in World War II as a B-17 Flying Fortress bomber pilot, completing 35 missions. He told me not too long ago he wasn't even talking about 99, he's waiting for the hundred.

Locals are bracing for an influx of tourists to flock to Cape Cod for the Fourth of July weekend, and they may have a few extra visitors joining them in the water. In the past week, researchers have tagged 12 great white sharks near Cape Cod Bay. While sharks have always been a part of the waters near Cape Cod's marine environment, researchers have seen their numbers grow over the years. ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Meteorologists say a new wave of hot, dry weather is expected to fuel a wildfire burning on the Kenai Peninsula. Continued smoke and record-breaking temperatures are predicted for the Fourth of July holiday week across south-central Alaska. The Anchorage Daily News reports that a wildfire has been burning in an area of the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge since June 5. Jonathan Ashford, a spokesman for the Alaska Incident Management Team, says that as of Sunday, the fire was at 106 square miles (274 sq. Meteorologists say that by Tuesday, another high-pressure ridge is expected to move over south-central Alaska.

More people die in drunken driving crashes in July than any other month, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). "Backyard barbecues, fireworks displays and other festivities surrounding the Fourth of July holiday often include drinking, making it one of the deadliest holidays of the year," said Helen Witty, national president of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, in a statement.
