He’s been a school resource officer there for the past three years, following in his dad’s footsteps who also worked for the Salem Police Department. But Goodman’s making a name for himself as Salem’s 2020 Officer of the Year. Principal Jamie Garst said Goodman redefines what school resource officers should be. “We can teach them to be good officers, we can’t teach them to be good people,” said Crawley.

SALEM, Va. - About 100 kids got to take a break from class to learn some new skills by playing with legos, robots and making music. The sixth grade students at Andrew Lewis Middle School in Salem attended the Geek Squad Academy this week. They learned about block coding, stop motion photography, how to use a camera, design a website and create digital music. If they don't learn technology, they're going to be left behind," said Jeffery Kendrick, a field lieutenant for the Geek Squad Academy. The Geek Squad hosts these academies each year at schools across the country.

SALEM, Va. - Ahead of the Salem Fair, the company that helps make the event happen is giving back to our community. Deggeller Attractions, the midway partner of the fair since its creation 32 years ago, donated $10,000 to create a makerspace at Andrew Lewis Middle School. A makerspace is designed for creating, learning, exploring and sharing by using a variety of tools ranging from 3-D printers to Legos. A computer lab in the Andrew Lewis Middle School library is being modified to become this new space. The new Andrew Lewis Maker Space will be available for all students in the school and it will feature a menagerie of hands-on activities that will be relatable to current studies in a variety of subjects.
