CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. - History was made in the town of Christiansburg on Friday with the first ever residential drone delivery. Wing officially launched its new drone service at what it calls 'The Nest,' it's area headquarters near the NRV mall. The company completed more than 80,000 test flights in its history, but Friday's deliveries were the first real deliveries made to regular customers. One received a purchase from Walgreens, the other received the first ever ecommerce delivery by drone via FedEx, and the Joyce family received a package of sweets from a Blacksburg small business called Sugar Magnolia. Christiansburg is the test site because of the company's partnership with Virginia Tech and the Mid Atlantic Aviation Partnership.

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. - The company bringing commercial drone deliver to Christiansburg, Wing, continues marching toward its goal of launching later this month. Construction continues at what Wing calls "The Nest," it's New River Valley base of operations adjacent to the mall. Wing said its drones can fly a distance of six miles, but on Friday it announced its initial delivery area, which is a bit smaller than that. People who live in the Windmill Hills and Carma Heights neighborhoods are eligible to sign up for the program. Wing encourages those outside the initial delivery area to sign up anyway if they're interested because the territory will expand.
