The briefing comes as the nation’s top public health agency is pleading with Americans not to travel for Thanksgiving, or to spend the holiday with people with whom they are not currently living. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released the recommendations Thursday, one week before the traditional family gathering celebration — and at a time when diagnosed coronavirus infections, hospitalizations, and deaths are skyrocketing across the country. If families do decide to include returning college students, military service members, or others in a gathering, the CDC is recommending that hosting families take added precautions. Gatherings should be outdoors, if possible, with people keeping 6 feet apart, wearing masks, and having just one person serve the food.

Compared to other states across the country, Virginia ranks 34th in highest amount of Coronavirus numbers in the country. According to a report from the White House Coronavirus Task Force obtained by 10 News, several localities in our viewing area are some of the worst in the state in terms of new coronavirus cases. Ralph Northam and his team on Tuesday, Virginia was the latest stop on her nationwide tour of hotspots. While states like Texas and Arizona have taken extreme efforts to curb their outbreaks and are seeing stabilization, Birx said testing efforts need to improve nationwide. WSLS 10 News has previously reported some localities in Southwest Virginia have contemplated dialing back reopening efforts. Birx said, ultimately, it would be up to each state’s governor and local leaders to enact tougher guidelines.
