It was a beautiful day in Roanoke to celebrate the birthdays of two World War II veterans; Marion Noel, who turned 99, and John Eakin, who turned 100.

It’s been 80 years since the Bedford community learned that they lost the Bedford Boys. Family commemorated July 17, the day the telegram came into town sharing the news of their death on D-Day with a ceremony.

A World War II veteran made a special appearance at Lord Botetourt High School on Tuesday.

PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii A ceremony to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the end of WWII was held in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on Wednesday. The event recounted the history of the war while honoring those who served.

LYNCHBURG, Va. Friday was National Purple Heart Day and Lynchburg veterans took time to remember their own. The local veterans group laid a wreath on Friday afternoon to honor the 286 Lynchburg soldiers who fought and died in wars like WWII, Korea and Vietnam. The group said that on Friday night, the Bank of the James and Liberty Universitys Freedom Tour will be lit purple for Purple Heart veterans.

BEDFORD, Va. – Bedford has a deep connection to World War II, and the town commemorated one of the war’s most important dates Friday morning. Church bells filled the air for the 75th anniversary of V-E Day, the day World War II officially ended in Europe. 19 men from Bedford, known as the “Bedford Boys,” were killed while storming the beaches of Normandy on D-Day. The National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, which itself commemorated the 75th anniversary of D-Day last year, had planned a parade in town for V-E Day. Although the parade has been canceled, National D-Day Memorial President April Cheek-Messier said the bells still illustrate the significance of this day.

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Tracy Turner is one of the two dozen people in Lynchburg who joined the flight to climb aboard the B-17 bomber, also known as the Aluminum Overcast. In 2016, Turner says he played a part in getting a WWII bomber plane to Roanoke. He says, as soon as he heard this B-17 bomber, associated with another organization, was coming to Lynchburg, he knew he had to make the trip. "Young lady introduced herself and said she was affiliated with the B-17 and Would you like to have it visit Lynchburg?' "It is rare and it's rare that a plane like this could visit Lynchburg.

The oldest known U.S. veteran of WWII celebrated his 110th birthday surrounded by relics of his past. Lawrence Brooks of New Orleans celebrated the big milestone at the National WWII Museum with family, supporters, tons of birthday treats and even a serenade from a musical trio who performed war classics. "I have made it, and I'm glad to be here, Brooks told APTN. Some of them I want to remember, and some of them I don't want to remember, he recalled. I said, Daddy how long you think youre going to live? his daughter Vanessa Brooks joked.

It took Chick-fil-A manager Daryl Howard, right, about 15 minutes to change a flat tire for a 96-year-old WWII veteran employees know as "Mr. Daryl Howard was taking orders Thursday morning at the restaurant in Severn when a 96-year-old WWII veteran, known to employees as Mr. Lee, came to the register and said he had a flat tire. "He was shaking, almost in tears saying he barely made it to the store on three tires because one was bad," Rudy Somoza, another manager, told CNN. Lee was able to park but had no one to help change his tire. It took Howard about 15 minutes to change the tire.
