Where Friday’s crash happened is a site of concern, as two crashes were reported in the same area last year. Highland County Board of Supervisors requested guard rails in the fall for that area after receiving several complaints. But after filing a report with the Virginia Department of Transportation, the area was deemed too narrow to install guardrails. Lambert said she plans to file another report with VDOT in the next two weeks about both curves with the hopes to install guardrails.

The crash happened at 7:44 a.m. when a tractor-trailer hauling 9,000 gallons fuel overturned into the Jackson River in the 8000 block of Jackson River Road in Highland County, according to Virginia State Police. At least four vehicles were involved in the crashes.

Crews completed repairs after a small slope failure and now, the stretch between the Explore Park entrance and the entrance at US 220 in Roanoke County is again open. Those wishing to drive on the Parkway south of the 220 entrance will have to wait quite a while longer. Heavy rain destroyed part of the Blue Ridge Parkway at milepost 128, about 7 miles south of the US 220 entrance. This closure is due to the 150 feet of the road lost near milepost 128 due to flooding in May.
