Allen will retire Jan. 8, 2021, with about a year left on his second term, according to his retirement letter. When he leaves, Chief Deputy Maj. David Bell, who’s served in law enforcement for 28 years, will run the Sheriff’s Office, according to Allen. “I hope to focus on some personal goals and spend more time with my family,” wrote Allen. Allen was first elected as sheriff in 2013.

While the Roanoke City Jail was late to experience positive coronavirus cases, some family members of inmates said jail-wide testing should have taken place sooner. As 10 News has reported, the Roanoke City Sheriffs Office announced everyone would be tested following several positive cases. A total of 14 inmates at the Roanoke City Jail have tested positive for the coronavirus, according to the Roanoke City Sheriffs Office. On Monday, the Sheriffs Office announced that of 389 inmates who were tested, 10 tested positive. This 10 is in addition to the four cases among inmates and 14 cases among Sheriffs Office staff, that 10 News has previously reported.

Natasha Harper has led many protests outside the Roanoke City Jail for more than two years and knows firsthand how devastating it is when a loved one takes his or her own life inside. She hated hearing that another person may have turned to suicide inside the jail late last week. On Thursday night, Arron Wheaton died after deputies found him hanging in his cell, according to the Roanoke City Sheriff's Office. She plans on going to city leaders and asking if they want to take action to improve conditions.
