At about 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, police responded to a call about a wanted person out of Richlands, leading to a search in the area surrounding Rock Road. Authorities said 45-year-old Jason Edward Matney was taken into custody after an overnight search. According to New River Valley Regional Jail, Matney was wanted for brandishing or pointing a firearm, assault with a firearm used in the commission of a felony, weapons convicted as a felon, conspiracy to kidnap/abduct by force without justification, kidnapping/abducting by force without justification and simple assault. Police said he is currently being held in the New River Valley Regional Jail without bond.

A grand jury indicted two people on Monday in connection with the murder of David Hayes, of Tazewell. On Monday, Justin Hackler was indicted on charges of second-degree murder, concealing a dead body, conspiracy to conceal a dead body and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Leslie Hackler, his mother, was indicted on charges of conspiracy to conceal a dead body and concealing a dead body. The Bland County Sheriff’s Office and Tazewell County Sheriff’s Office both presented evidence to the grand jury in Bland County Circuit Court on Monday.
