Some of the home’s residents, suddenly confined to their rooms or their floor, were bewildered and chafed at restrictions, even trying to take the elevator and escape confinement. The soldiers’ mission: fan out across the country to visit hundreds of nursing homes and help shore up their defenses against the pandemic. On top of that, nursing home staff in Portugal commonly work in several different care homes and travel between them on public transport. They have already been to more than half of the targeted 2,770 care homes.

LCS Board members were joined by the Task Force on the Future of Education Pre-K-12 and Beyond. The special task force was created by Lynchburg city council in 2019 to review issues affecting the education system, then make recommendations to the board. But since they last met in February, members say the pandemic raised new concerns, including remote learning and mental wellness. The group decided to seek recommendations from the city’s steering committee, then adjust their vision.

Virginia’s Task Force for Students and Schools in Challenging Environments listed suggestions for students including the districts embracing families of all economic and racial backgrounds and expanding internet across the state. Halifax County’s superintendent is a co-chair of the group and believes every Virginian needs an equal chance to learn. That’s bigger than the disparity of wealthy districts and those who do not have as much wealth," said Dr. Mark Lineburg, Halifax County Public Schools superintendent. The new report expands on the task force’s first set of findings which was released in 2014.
