State police said the accident happened shortly before 7:30 p.m. Saturday (Jan. 16) on Jefferson Highway in Staunton. Howard A. Tillou died after being taken to the University of Virginia Medical Center, police said. It’s unclear why Tillou was in the road. The accident happened near an assisted living facility.

On Friday, a raccoon found in Staunton, Virginia, was submitted for rabies testing after a suspected encounter with a pet. The raccoon tested positive for rabies and while it no longer poses a threat, any person or animal that may have been exposed to the raccoon’s saliva would be considered a potential exposure and should receive medical evaluation. Rabies is deadly to animals and humans once symptoms begin, but can be prevented in humans if they receive vaccine and medication soon after exposure. VDH has this advice to help prevent the spread of rabies:

Five children in Virginia have now had Multisystem Inflamitory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C), according to the Virginia Department of Health. The latest case reported in the commonwealth was of a child who lives in the Central Shenandoah Health District. That health district contains Rockingham, Augusta, Rockbridge, Bath and Highland counties, as well as the cities of Harrisonburg, Staunton, Waynesboro, Lexington and Buena Vista. The other four cases reported were located in the Prince William, Alexandria and Fairfax health district. Two cases were reported in the Fairfax health district.

Mitchell is 5 feet, 4 inches tall, weighs about 150 pounds and has brown hair and hazel eyes, according to the Sheriff's Office. Authorities say Mitchell was last seen in a 2006 light blue Kia Sorento with Virginia license plate UUS-3083.
