At least 15 states, including Virginia, have introduced some sort of legislation in recent years to make daylight saving year-round. “I’m 84 years old, and I’ve been living with daylight saving time and it hasn’t changed my body,” said Roger Kelly. “Go to bed like 15 minutes earlier, get up 15 minutes earlier. As for whether we’ll ever see daylight saving extended — only time will tell.

He said 29 children in the New River Valley are currently on the waiting list for a bed. Mele said the wait between builds has left him sleepless, and he hopes to get the next round of beds out to the community soon. “When we leave and the kids are bouncing on the bed with joy, you feel so good inside that you want to start making more beds,” Mele said. The local chapter of the nonprofit Sleep in Heavenly Peace is made up of volunteers dedicated to building, assembling and delivering top-notch bunk beds to children and families in need. Roanoke Valley Chapter President Dave Jones said the need is overwhelming in Southwest Virginia. The Roanoke Valley Chapter just opened in January. Four local Lowe’s stores are partnering up with the organization and volunteers tomorrow to build at least 40 bunk beds.
