The Shred-A-Thon was back in Danville on Tuesday because it had to end early on Monday due to a scheduling conflict with the shredding company. During the course of two days, we were able to collect 18,000 pounds of documents. "I heard on the website y'all was going to be here today, so I come by to throw my stuff away. It's free for both businesses and individuals to bring as many documents as they'd like.

Monday's event ended early due to a driver shortage by Kodiak Shredding, but on Tuesday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., you can bring your sensitive materials to be shredded to the Danville Schewels at 126 Sandy Court. We apologize for this inconvenience this may have caused. After Tuesday's extended hours in Danville, our last Shred-A-Thon of the fall season will be on November 21 in Roanoke at the Schewels 3602 Ferncliff Avenue from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.

"We bought our house in 2012 and we have just been saving things that we thought were important," said Melissa Wright. 65,000 pounds were shredded at the last WSLS 10 Shred-A-Thon in Christiansburg in May. Tony Edmonds took Monday off from work to deliver years worth of papers belonging to him and two of his family members. Monday's total puts us at nearly 1.8 million pounds shredded since the WSLS 10 Shred-A-Thon's kicked off in 2014.

Rocky Mount brought in 10,000 pounds of paper at that first event on November 3, 2014 but on Monday, they came with six times that amount. Monday's event, the first of five weekly shred events, netted 60,000 pounds of material. Shredding documents safely, securely and without limits. All WSLS 10 Shred-A-Thons are free and there is no limit on how much anyone can bring.

The Roanoke stop brought in 365,000 pounds of paper. To put that in perspective, the four stops earlier this month brought in a combined 260,000 pounds. After collecting a total of 625,000 pounds this spring, the WSLS 10 Shred-A-Thon will return this fall. Since WSLS 10 began hosting Shred-A-Thon events, we have collected a total of 1,559,000 pounds of paper.

Police officers said the increase is partly due to over-the phone scams involving Green Dot cards. Bolling said criminals convince people to purchase Green Dot cards or similar pre-paid credit cards. However, since March, officers received a flood of calls related to "Green Dot" scams. Roanoke City said fraud cases are under-reported because some victims are ashamed.

The event is being held at the Woods Service Center at 418 E Washington Avenue. Any documents containing sensitive information can be shredded at the event for free. Shredding will start at 6 a.m. and continue until 2 p.m. Monday. So far, more than 50,000 lbs have been shredded.
