Republican State Senator Steve Newman is expressing frustration over the Virginia Parole Board. In a post on Facebook Wednesday, Newman talks about a previously leaked email chain that allegedly shows a conversation between the former parole board chairwoman and a board employee. This week, Jennifer Moschetti, a state investigator working on the probe into the parole board was fired. For privacy reasons, OSIG cannot comment on personnel matters and investigations.โ10 News also reached out to Roanoke City Mayor Sherman Lea, who serves on the parole board. He said the Code of Virginia prohibits him from talking about matters related to parole.

Roanoke mayor scorns late night St. Patrickโs Day celebrations downtown
ROANOKE, Va. โ Hundreds of people flocked to downtown Roanoke Saturday night to celebrate St. Patrickโs Day, but Roanoke Mayor Sherman Lea believes their decision may set the city back in its battle against COVID-19. โWe do not want another spread that could affect me, you and others if we have a spread in this city again,โ Lea said. Lea said while Roanokeโs COVID-19 vaccination rates are improving, they are not high enough in his opinion for gatherings as large as of Saturday nightโs festivities. He says he will look to enforce COVID-19 capacity guidelines more harshly in the city after the celebrations. What we want to do is save lives.โLea said restaurants are liable to face punishment if they violated capacity guidelines on Saturday.

Roanoke city leaders asked for suggestions to rename Lee Plaza
ROANOKE, VA. โ The Confederate memorial in downtown Roanoke was removed last summer and now city leaders are working on renaming the plaza where it stood. On Thursday night, the public got to weigh in on what they think Lee Plaza, named after the Confederate General, should be called. A few others liked something more generic such as Patriots Plaza or Freedom Plaza. Roanokeโs Democratic city council has looked unfavorable on Lee Plaza and the memorial over the last few years. A local cemetery took possession of the Confederate memorial and intends to put it on display with appropriate context.

After the Patrick Henry girls basketball team won the Region 5D championship Monday night, their excitement soon turned to frustration. Mayor Lea.โOn Tuesday, Lea told 10 News that he considers Hedrick a good friend and thought he was private messaging him. He also said that he and the mayor have had a private conversation since the post. The Patrick Henry girls said theyโre going to be using this as fuel for their next game, the state semifinal, against Potomac Falls on Wednesday.

The Roanoke City Council meets officially for the first time with new members Robert Jeffrey and Stephanie Moon. No one can attend the Roanoke City Council meeting in person today because of COVID. City Council members will be the only ones allowed in council chambers. Martinsville City Council meets this morning where Tammy Pearson will be sworn in as a newly elected council member.
