(Court TV/Pool via AP)MINNEAPOLIS – Jury selection for a former Minneapolis police officer charged in George Floyd’s death was halted before it began Monday by the state's effort to add a third-degree murder charge. AdThere was no indication when that court will rule, but a hold could delay Chauvin’s trial for weeks. Chauvin is charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter in Floyd’s death. For third-degree murder, they must prove that Chauvin's actions caused Floyd's death, and that his actions were reckless and without regard for human life. Floyd’s death sparked sometimes violent protests in Minneapolis and beyond, and led to a nationwide reckoning on race.

A three-judge panel said Hennepin County District Judge Peter Cahill erred last fall when he rejected a prosecution motion to reinstate the third-degree murder charge against Derek Chauvin. A reinstated third-degree murder count could increase the prosecution’s odds of getting a murder conviction. "We believe the charge of 3rd-degree murder, in addition to manslaughter and felony murder, reflects the gravity of the allegations against Mr. Chauvin. Cahill ruled last October that third-degree murder under Minnesota law requires proof that someone’s conduct was “eminently dangerous to others,” plural, not just to Floyd. Prosecutors want to add charges of aiding and abetting third-degree murder against them, but that question will be resolved later.

As the trial approaches for Chauvin, who is charged with murder in Floyd's death, prosecutors are putting the time Chauvin's knee was on Floyd's neck at about nine minutes. The fact that the figure has evolved probably won't matter at Chauvin’s trial, which begins Monday with jury selection. He had been handcuffed and was pleading that he couldn't breathe, but Chauvin kept his knee on Floyd's neck even after he stopped moving and speaking. The narrative in the initial complaint filed May 29 by the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office says Chauvin held his knee to Floyd’s neck for 8 minutes, 46 seconds. This means Chauvin had his knee on Floyd’s neck for at least nine minutes flat, but possibly for as long as 9 minutes, 31 seconds.

The Roanoke City Sheriff's Office is hosting a hiring fair Saturday morning at the Roanoke Police Training Academy. The Sheriff's Office, which provides security for Roanoke's courts and runs the Roanoke City Jail, is looking to fill 18 positions. Nikki Jenkins of the Roanoke City Sheriff's Office. CAMPBELL COUNTY, Va. - Authorities need your help to find a man wanted for questioning in Campbell County. The Sheriff's Office is asking the public's help to find the unidentified man who is wanted for questioning in connection with an electronics theft that took place on Oct. 6 in the Smoky Hollow area. Authorities also shared a photo of a vehicle that may have been used during a crime. AMHERST COUNTY, Va. - One man is behind bars and another is dead after a shooting in Amherst County. John Austin was shot and killed in his home along Riverview Road just after 3 p.m. Tuesday, according to Amherst County Sheriff E.W. "I asked God, you know, to forgive the person and everything and pray for the family and pray for the community," Wesley said. As the Sheriff's Office continues its investigation, Wesley says the community will come together to heal. You don't know what state of mind person was in...what the person was going through then and anybody can snap," Wesley said.

CAMPBELL COUNTY, Va. - Campbell County authorities and the parents of two missing teenagers are expected to talk about the search Thursday morning. After first seeking the public's help on Sept. 19, authorities again on Wednesday asked for assistance after Jacob Morris and Jasmyn Gordon were reported as runaway/missing person on Sept. 17 by their families, according to the Sheriff's Office. Jacob is 5 feet, 6 inches tall and weighs about 120 pounds, with black hair, hazel eyes and a birthmark on the left side of his face. The Sheriff's Office did not provide a description of Jasmyn. PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. - A man accused of killing his mother, sister and her toddler was not arraigned Thursday morning because he has been hospitalized. According to the Pittsylvania County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court Clerk's Office, Bernard was in the hospital as of 8:30 a.m. Thursday, which is when he was scheduled to be arraigned. According to Pittsylvania County Sheriff Mike Taylor, he was brought back to the Pittsylvania County Jail around 3 a.m. Wednesday. Joan Bernard was found in the driveway, according to the Sheriff's Office.

NARROWS, Va. - Authorities are currently investigating a tractor-trailer fire in Giles County, according to the Sheriff's Office. Deputies say the fire is at the intersection of US-460 and VA-61 in Narrows. US-460 West is shut down in the area. EDEN, N.C. -Update, July 20, 8 a.m.:Deputies said Saturday morning that a man wanted in Southside is now in custody after he was considered armed and dangerous and accused of multiple crimes. The Rockingham County Sheriff's Office said 37-year-old Jesse Edwards surrendered peacefully to deputies at the sheriff's office Friday night around 11:45 p.m. Original story, July 16:Authorities are searching for a wanted North Carolina man in Henry County, just outside Ridgeway, about a mile from the state line, according to Rockingham County, North Carolina Sheriff Samuel Page. After the shooting, Edwards demanded to be dropped off at a bridge on North Carolina Highway 14 in Eden, North Carolina. She is now in stable condition and her injuries do not appear to be life-threatening, according to the Sheriff's Office.

GRAYSON COUNTY, Va. - A fawn is back with its mother thanks to the actions of Grayson County Sheriff Richard Vaughan. On Friday, the Sheriff's Office received a call about a fawn being attacked by dogs. The fawn was saved by Michael Funk, of Fries, according to the Sheriff's Office. Vaughan responded because he was filling in for the animal control office's deputy, who was out of town. After rescuing the fawn from the dogs, the Sheriff's Office says Vaughan and Funk were able to help the fawn and reunite it with its mother!

HENRY COUNTY, Va. - A Henry County man faces multiple felony charges after an undercover investigation found drugs, guns and more on his property. On Wednesday, investigators executed a search warrant at 31-year-old David Cannaday's property on Hidden Valley Drive as part of a 16-month operation. The Sheriff's Office estimates the street value of the suspected drugs is more than $8,000. This matter remains under investigation and the Sheriff's Office says additional charges are anticipated in regards to this ongoing investigation. BOTETOURT COUNTY, Va. - A man authorities say is responsible for several Botetourt County break-ins last week is in custody. Ricky Gillespie Jr, 39, of Goodview was stopped and arrested Friday, June 21 in Effingham County, Georgia while driving a stolen car that was used during the Botetourt County break-ins, according to the Sheriff's Office. Gillespie is currently being held without bond on charges in Effingham County in the Effingham County Georgia Jail. FLOYD COUNTY, Va. - The Floyd County Sheriffs Office is asking for help finding a missing 16-year-old girl. Kalie Mae Alderman is 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighs about 100 pounds. On Monday, the Sheriff's Office received a report that she was missing from the Shooting Creek area of the county. She was last seen wearing a white and gray sweatshirt, blue jeans and black high-top tennis shoes. Anyone with information about where she may be is asked to contact the Floyd County Sheriffs Office at 540-745-9334.
