Franklin County Board of Supervisors met for a work session on Tuesday to discuss how to pay for a permanent SRO in each elementary school.

Two additional school resource officers (SRO) are headed to Danville Public Schools thanks to a grant from the Danville Police Department.

The Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to approve a grant to add 10 school resource officers to its school division.

SROs are currently assigned to the county’s six secondary schools, but regularly patrol the other 14 sites -- which allows law enforcement to be present in every school every day. The grant ensures an SRO is assigned to a particular school.

The former textile mill village of Dan River Mills is eligible for listing on the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places. The Virginia Tech Board of Visitors Executive Committee will meet today. The Botetourt County School Board is expected to pass a resolution, supporting school resource officers. The school system says SROs serve a vital role in keeping students, faculty and staff safe, and pulling state funding will reduce or eliminate the ability of the school system to have them. Virginia Tech holds its annual Diversity Summit today.

LYNCHBURG, Va. On Tuesday night one group will be able to make its pitch to the Lynchburg School Board about why the division should no longer have school resource officers. Due to the coronavirus, the school board is asking Reason Chandler, with Virginia Organizing, and Lynchburg Police Chief Ryan Zuidema to send letters in via email explaining why school resource officers should go or stay. Part of my letter also asks the school board and Dr. Edwards, who is our superintendent, to maybe hand this off to our equity task force, said Chandler, whos also a Lynchburg dad asking the school board to remove all school resource officers. Right now, there are a total of five school resource officers spread out in the middle and high schools. But first, school board members are expected to read their letters out loud to the public on Tuesday evening.
