A missing Russell County woman and her one-year-old child were found in the Town of Bedford on Feb. 16 after being missing for more than ten days, according to the Bedford Police Department.

Ralph Northam announced that a special election in the 38th Senate District will happen on March 23 to fill the seat held by Sen. Ben Chafin before his death on Jan. 1. The last day for candidates to file to appear on the ballot is January 22, 2021. Information regarding candidacy requirements can be found on the Department of Elections website. This district contains Bland County, Buchanan County, Dickenson County, Russell County, Tazewell County, Pulaski County, Radford and parts of Smyth County, Wise County and Montgomery County.

A 5-year-old child is dead after allegedly being forced onto an Alabama highway as punishment. 35-year-old Bryan Starr will be charged with reckless murder for the death of 5-year-old Austin Birdseye. The 5-year-old was hit by an oncoming car and was transported to Piedmont Columbus Regional where he was later pronounced dead. “I can’t imagine the mother’s grief that she’s going through,” said Russell County Sheriff Heath Taylor. Officials say they don’t anticipate charges for the driver who hit Austin Birdseye.

The Tobacco Region Revitalization Commission's Evan Feinman did not recoup $210,000 Chuck Lessin owed the state, according to a report from the Office of the State Inspector General. The commission gives performance-based grant or loan money to local governments through the Tobacco Region Opportunity Fund. When AP asked for details, the commission backtracked, saying the project had met its goals and no repayment was due after all. Appalachian Biofuels spent $210,000 on project-related costs but stopped using the grant money after a drop in oil prices, according to commission documents and the watchdog report. The company provided a list of expenses to the tobacco commission that show significant spending on travel or lack much detail.

RUSSELL COUNTY, Va. - A woman is dead after a two-vehicle crash in Russell County. A Honda CRV crossed the center line and hit a school bus head-on, according to the Virginia State Police. The driver of the Honda, Diana Salyers, 56, of Nora, died at the scene, according to the Virginia State Police. The driver of the bus, Arthur Hicks, 58, of Castlewood, suffered minor injuries and was checked at the scene by emergency medical services. No students were on the bus at the time of the crash, which remains under investigation.
