GILES COUNTY, Va. – Drivers will now be able to use all travel lanes in Route 460 in Giles County. On Friday, VDOT reopened the right lane of westbound Route 460 near Rich Creek. With this lane open, all travel lanes on Route 460 have now been restored to traffic following the Feb. 21 mudslide. The right westbound lane of Route 460 has been closed since Feb. 21 due to the mudslide closing all four lanes. After making sure the slope next to the westbound road shoulder was repaired and stabilized, VDOT determined the right lane, which was the last closed lane, could safely reopen to traffic.

BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. – Homeowners within the Country Estates Drive subdivision, off Route 460, have been asking for help since 2008. The Bedford Regional Water Authority said the challenge was connecting the rural area to the closest water line. In the past eight months, the county constructed a new water line. So, I think now they have the luxury of not having to think about water,” said Megan Pittman, director of administration for the Bedford Regional Water Authority. Homeowners agreed to pay some of the cost of the waterline extension above the water authority’s standard fees to make the project happen.

On Wednesday, VDOT opened the right eastbound lane of the road to traffic and, weather permitting, VDOT will have a westbound lane open before the weekend. Since Sunday, crews have removed than 1,000 cubic yards of materials from the slide location, including dirt and debris in the roadway and from the slope along westbound Route 460. AdUPDATE Feb. 22 5:00pm:Shutting down an entire road and forcing drivers to find new routes around the Rich Creek area in Giles County, a mudslide continues to grow on Route 460. “Route 460 is definitely a main artery for people going to West Virginia,” said Dorsey Bradley, who lives in Rich Creek. A year ago, on Route 460 but closer to Glen Lyn, a mudslide blocked the eastbound lane.

GILES COUNTY, Va. – Police say a Giles County man is dead following a crash that happened Friday morning. At about 10:15 a.m., a 1990 Chevrolet S10 pickup truck was traveling west on Route 460, near Route 758, when it drove off the left side of the highway, went through the median and crossed the eastbound lanes. The pickup continued off the road before overturning. 64-year-old James E. Sanders, of Pembroke, was transported to Carilion Giles Community Hospital in Pearisburg where he succumbed to his injuries later that same morning. The crash remains under investigation.

BLUE RIDGE, Va. – It’s the end of an era for Botetourt County students. Colonial Elementary School in Blue Ridge rang the final bell at its old building Friday afternoon. Students will move further down Route 460 to a brand-new building when they return from remote learning in two weeks. Principal Tammy Riggs says she has pushed for a new school complex for a decade because the old Colonial building is too small for the growing student population. The elementary school has been in the same building since 1939, and Riggs said it is emotional to leave it behind.

GILES COUNTY, Va. – State police said a man died in a crash in Giles County on Monday. It happened just before 1 a.m. on Route 460, just west of Thomas Drive. A tractor-trailer ran off the side of the road, hit a guardrail and flipped into the median, according to Virginia State Police. BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. – Virginia State Police Trooper T.M. Wertz is investigating a two vehicle crash which resulted in a fatality. According to State Police, the crash happened Friday, at 10:53 p.m. on Route 460, two tenths of a mile west of Dixie Lane in Bedford County. Police say a 1993 Toyota Corolla was traveling east in the westbound lanes on Route 460, when the vehicle hit a 2015 Chevrolet Malibu head-on. According to police, he was wearing his seat belt and was transported to Centra Bedford Memorial Hospital, where he later died.

All lanes of Route 460 in Giles County remain closed following a mudslide that collapsed portions of the road and damaged a retaining wall. As of Monday afternoon, VDOT does not have a timetable for reopening the road, but said it will likely be weeks. If you’re driving to West Virginia from Roanoke, Blacksburg you will need to take Interstate 81 to Wytheville and detour onto northbound Interstate 77. The Virginia Department of Transportation expects this to be a long-term closure possibly lasting weeks. An exact time for reopening has not been established.

BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. – Virginia State Police is investigating a hit and run in Bedford County. Police said around 5:20 Saturday morning, a white 2008-2016 Ford F-250 or F-350 was traveling west on Route 460 near the Moose Lodge east of Route 681. The vehicle struck Hunter Dillon Noel, 21, of Bedford County, who was walking in the grass median. Noel was traveling west on Route 460 when he was struck by the Ford work truck traveling in the left lane. ROANOKE, VA. – The Virginia Department of Transportation is looking for feedback before possible changes come to Route 460 to improve congestion and safety issues. Thursday night, VDOT officials hosted a public meeting at the Berglund Center in Roanoke to educate the public on traffic and safety along a five-mile section of Route 460 (Orange/Challenger Avenue), located in Roanoke and Roanoke County between Williamson Road (Route 11) and Route 220 Alternate (Cloverdale Road). “I’ve been really concerned about the traffic issues along 460,” said Katie Pyne, a driver who attended the meeting. VDOT posted an online survey to receive public input on a planning study to consider potential safety and operational improvements. VDOT officials then hope to come back to the public in January or February with a recommended improvement plan.

ROANOKE, Va. – The Roanoke County Sheriff's Office holds a free child safety seat check today. It’s looking to make safety and operation improvements to a 5-mile stretch from Williamson Road to Route 220 Alternate. GILES COUNTY, Va. - UPDATE:According to the Giles County Sheriff's Office, Route 460 is back open as of 7:30 a.m. on Sunday. Major detours are in place after a gas tanker crashed at the Celanese Bridge Saturday night. Officers say Route 460 east and west is closed at Thomas Drive to the back gate of Celanese. Anyone reporting to work at Celanese should take Route 100 to Narrows and back to 460 and park at the back gate. Giles County says due to the extent of the damage and a fuel spill, Route 460 is expected to be blocked for an extended period.
