ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. – When a tractor-trailer overturned on Route 220 in Roanoke County Wednesday afternoon, it was the moment Dave Hoglund feared would happen. Hoglund, who often commutes up Route 220 from Smith Mountain Lake, said he worried for years that a truck driver would speed and crash on the road. The proposed Interstate 73 would run alongside Route 220 if it is ever built. While Interstate 73 remains in limbo, Hoglund hopes officers pay more attention to trucks speeding on Route 220. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen a tractor-trailer pulled over for a ticket.”VDOT reports that 10% of Route 220′s traffic between Roanoke County and Henry County are tractor-trailer drivers.

That’s exactly what the Virginia Department of Transportation is hoping to do for drivers on Route 220. VDOT spokesperson Jason Bond said the project will cost $16 million, funded by state and federal funding. The project will cut down wait times at traffic lights by 20 percent and reduce crashes by 15 to 20 percent. “Traffic congestion is expected to constrain future growth and travel along the Route 220 corridor from Roanoke to Martinsville," said Bond. It will get a briefing on improvements to the Route 220 corridor. A series of events will take place this week for Sustainability Week. It’s sponsored by the Town of Blacksburg, Virginia Tech and Sustainable Blacksburg. There will be a series of events this week, addressing environmental stewardship. Sustainability Week runs through Saturday.

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va, – If you’re driving down Route 220 in Franklin County this weekend, you’ll see a lot of stuff in the front yard of the Humane Society. The Franklin County Humane Society is holding a yard sale on Friday and Saturday to raise money for cats at the shelter by selling various furniture and items. Javier isn’t surprised Hale wanted all of her belongings to support shelter pets. Volunteers spent Labor Day weekend loading it up to bring to the non-profit to start a big yard sale. We just had a great group of people who gave up their weekend to help,” said Humane Society President Donna Essig.

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. – Both northbound lanes of Route 220 are closed due to a crash near Naff Road, according to V-DOT. 10 News has spoken with Franklin County dispatch, who say state police are leading the investigation. BOTETOURT COUNTY, Va. - The 69-year-old Troutville man who was the victim of a hit-and-run crash Friday evening has died, according to Virginia State Police. ORIGINAL STORYVirginia state police are seeking information in Botetourt County following a hit-and-run crash. The hit-and-run occurred Friday on Route 11, in front of the Dodge's gas station, just south of Route 220. The car was traveling south on Route 11- when it struck a pedestrian crossing the roadway. BOONES MILL, Va. - There will be apples as far as the eye can see Saturday in one Franklin County town. A few streets in downtown Boones Mill, just off Route 220, will be the site of the 42nd Boones Mill Apple Festival. There will be, of course, apples, and also: apple butter, apple fritters, candy apples, apple magnets, T-shirts and more, including live music throughout the day. The event used to be a time for local apple producers to bring their harvest to town. Money raised will go to a college scholarship fund for a Franklin County High School senior.

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. – The Virginia State Police is investigating a deadly single-vehicle crash that happened on Route 220 at 2:07 a.m. Saturday. Police said a 2006 Scion TC was traveling south when the vehicle ran off the left side of the road and overturned several times. He was not wearing his seat belt and died at the scene. A male passenger was taken by a family member to the hospital in Franklin County. The crash is under investigation.

FRANKLIN COUNTY, VA - An 86-year-old woman is dead after a two-vehicle crash in Franklin County. Virginia State Police is investigating the fatal crash that happened Tuesday around 1 p.m. on Route 220, at the intersection of Route 615 in Franklin County. The Taurus was struck by a 2014 Buick Regal, which was traveling north on Route 220, according to Virginia State Police. The passenger, Jean Young Mattox, 86, of Rocky Mount, was transported to Carilion Roanoke Memorial where she died. This crash remains under investigation, according to Virginia State Police.

HIGHLAND COUNTY, Va. - A 61-year-old man died after a crash Wednesday night on Route 220 in Highland County. The man was driving a 2001 Ford F-150 and heading north when h ran off the left side of the road a half-mile north of Route 642 and overturned into a small pond, according to state police.
