Staff at the Western Virginia Historical Society say the building is a community staple. Journalists with the Roanoke Times unionized last year to form the Timesland Guild in hopes of advocating for better wages and benefits. Ultimately, it was Berkshire Hathaway’s decision to sell the building, but the journalists of the Timesland Guild say they will continue to serve the Roanoke community. The staff at the Roanoke Times have been told they will find a new place to work from and relocate once the current building is sold.

The Roanoke Times reported Wednesday that the fee will be used to protect lower-income customers from the increased costs of switching to renewable energy. Virginia’s Clean Economy Act requires Appalachian Power and Dominion Energy to use carbon-free sources by 2050. The program requires Appalachian and Dominion to cap the bills of their low-income customers. There are 500,000-some Appalachian customers in the western part of the state.

The Roanoke Times reports that the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission also lifted a stop-work order for all but a 25-mile segment of the interstate transmission line that includes the Jefferson National Forest and adjacent land. While acknowledging problems with erosion and sedimentation during the first two years of construction, FERC found that allowing the pipeline to be completed is best for both the environment and the public. In a 2-1 decision, the commission wrote that the presence of equipment, personnel, and partially completed construction is disruptive to landowners. However, new legal challenges could limit the scope of work.

The Roanoke Times reports that the new permits issued on Friday will allow construction to resume on the Mountain Valley Pipeline’s path across nearly 1,000 streams and wetlands. In 2018, a three-judge panel of the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals found that a corps-issued permit violated a West Virginia regulatory requirement that pipeline stream crossings must be completed within 72 hours to limit environmental harm.

Waldvogel Commercial Properties staff members confirmed Tuesday that its now under contract, as signs around the property show. Staff will not be able to announce who the buyer is or how the property will be used for about another two months. The Roanoke Times doesn't use its printing press anymore. News broke in May 2018 that the building was for sale.
